I have chosen to do audio sound replacement for my project; this will involve me replacing the entire audio of my chosen footage. Audio sound replacement involves me replacing every piece of sound within the clip from dialogue, music to Foley sound effects. The reason I have chosen to do this as my project is because I have always been fascinated by the way films use sound to bring them to life, epically animation films which have no sound when created. What interests me about sound replacement is how they create realism within an animation by using these sound effects they have created using Foley. Sound plays a massive impact on people when watching films; the sound creates the atmosphere of the film for example with a horror film sound is commonly intense harsh sounds are used to create an eerie, creepy effect, yet if you played the entire film without any music the film would be less scary to the viewer as the sound generates an indication of what is happening in that scene and what to be prepared for.

The clip I have chosen to look at is a short clip of ‘Ice Age – Continental Drift, Scrat Crack Up part 2’. The clip is a short insight to the film which is coming to cinemas soon. The reason I have chosen to look at this is because the clip using a lot of interesting sounds which are mainly created using Foley effects, what interests me about Foley is that sounds are not always created how you would think something’s using the same object which is in the clip doesn’t actually create a realistic sound when added. Animation films such as Ice Age rely a lot on sound to bring their creations to life due to animation not having any diegitc sound every footstep, creek and background sound has to be recreated to make the scenes believable.

One of the main reasons I chose ice age was because of the large use of Foley effects due to it being an animation, having never before had a chance to create Foley sounds I think the task will be fun and challenging and give me a better insight into how sounds are created. The clip is around 2 minutes 30 seconds, yet although the clip isn’t that long it has so many sounds within it to create the scenes. The scene is set mainly in the ocean and has a main focus on Scrat which is one of the typical characters within the movie, as it is mostly based in the ocean there is a lot of water and bubble effects. The character itself uses a lot of sound effects when it moves which will be challenging to make every sound in sync with every footstep. The clip doesn’t contain much music or dialogue; this will give me the opportunity to focus on Foley.

What I am hoping to achieve from this is to create a realistic believable piece of audio sound replacement, so that the viewers wouldn’t be able to tell that the clip has had its audio changed and that it does seem realistic and right for the piece. Although I know this will be challenging I’m interested to see the outcome of the piece and am excited to explore the way in which sound creates the piece.
